"NEW COSMOS OF PHOTOGRAPHY Vol. 1" is the first issue published on July 15, 1994, as a free magazine introducing winning works from the "New Cosmos of Photography" open call—a cultural support project by Canon—as well as recent works by past winners.

"New Cosmos of Photography" was launched as an open call with no restrictions on work size, number of pieces, theme, or format. This issue presents the results of the 9th open call, which recorded 4,158 submissions from 427 applicants, with an average age of 29.4 years. The jury included Kotaro Iizawa, Fumio Nanjo, and Nobuyoshi Araki, with Robert Frank participating as a guest judge.

In addition to featuring Excellence Award winners Katsumi Omori, Ayako Kaneko, and Jean-Claude Bélégou, this issue includes honorable mentions. The special feature highlights Robert Frank, and the "PORTFOLIO" section, featuring past Excellence Award winners, contains works by Yuki Onodera, Hiroshi Nomura, Makoto Tatsumoto, and Ayako Mogi. This volume captures the activities of "New Cosmos of Photography" in the early 1990s, showcasing new talents in photographic expression through both open calls and publications.
