Shinichiro Kobayashi's photobook, "Tokyo Bay Side," features photographs taken with a large format camera of the Tokyo Bay area, which has been undergoing transformation since the late 1980s. Published by Recycle Bunka Co., Ltd. in 1991, it compiles Kobayashi's early works.

The bay area captured in the book shows the ongoing construction of highways and stadiums alongside factories awaiting demolition after serving their purpose, rusty machinery, and industrial equipment. It depicts Tokyo's landscape in the midst of "scrap and build," where new constructions and old demolitions coexist in the same location.

In the same year, the "Tokyo Bay Side" exhibition was held at the Ginza Nikon Salon, showcasing 59 original color prints. This early work by Kobayashi led to his continued focus on factories, ruins, and the peripheries of cities.

Shinichiro Kobayashi (1956–)

Born in Tokyo in 1956. Photographer. After graduating from Senshu University's Faculty of Economics, he worked at a studio and as a photographer for a publishing company before becoming independent in 1988.

Around 1991, he began to present works themed on "scrap and build" in urban and industrial areas. He has consistently photographed places created, used, and eventually abandoned by human hands, such as factories, bays, and ruins.

His photobooks include "DEATHTOPIA: Ruin Play," "Drifting Ruins," and "Going Through Ruins." He has also photographed industrial facilities and ruins in various locations, including Gunkanjima.
