This is the culmination of works by photographer Yutaka Kanase, who continued to observe Chiba Prefecture for nearly half a century. This photo book contains photographs taken over 33 years, from 1976 to 2009, depicting Chiba's landscapes, people's lives, and changes in the coastlines and towns.
While documenting the significantly changing coastal areas, residential areas, fishing villages, and industrial zones of Chiba since the period of rapid economic growth, this work transcends mere regional records. It captures the essence of the people living in the land and the accumulation of time. The title "Ura Meguri" (巡廻), meaning "coastal巡り" or "巡り the coast," reflects Kanase's perspective, who walked around and continuously observed the coastal lands.
Yutaka Kanase, who worked not only as a photographer but also as an editor, consistently pursued realism photography that closely depicted society and everyday life. In this book, rather than focusing on sensational events or iconic landscapes, he meticulously captures scenes that tend to be buried in daily life. The coastlines of the Boso Peninsula, reclaimed land, housing complexes, festivals, and people's daily lives are recorded in quiet monochrome, serving as a memory of the region and simultaneously reflecting the changes in post-war Japan itself.
This is a culmination of Yutaka Kanase's work, who continued to photograph Chiba for many years. It is an important work for readers interested in regional photography, documentary photography, and post-war Japanese history.
