EDGE TO EDGE #7 Kaoru Izima Color Photographs

"Color Photographs" is a photobook by Kaoru Ijima. Published in 1992 as the 7th volume in the "EDGE TO EDGE" series by Korinsha Press. Produced concurrently with volume 6, "Black and White Photographs," this book focuses primarily on Ijima's color work.

The book also includes an interview where Ijima discusses the sensations and colors he drew from nature. He cites the colors of nature experienced at locations such as the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley as the backdrop for his expression, and speaks about his use of filters, paints, and post-processing on positives as a means to transcend the conventional boundaries of photographic expression.

He also touches on his advertising and magazine work, his personal projects, the free paper "SALE" and cassette magazine "TRA" he founded himself, and his relationship with fashion photography. Both the works and the text reveal Ijima's creative stance: a constant search for unseen photographic expressions rather than merely tracing existing ones.

Kaoru Ijima (1954–)

Born in Kyoto in 1954. Photographer and CM director. After graduating from the Tokyo College of Photography and traveling to the United States, he began his career as a photographer.

He held solo exhibitions at the Ginza Nikon Salon in 1977 and the Shinjuku Nikon Salon in 1980. Alongside his photography, he was involved in launching his own media, such as the free paper "SALE" and the cassette magazine "TRA." Starting around 1983, he worked on fashion magazines like "Ryuko Tsushin" and "marie claire" and advertising photography, and also shot album covers for artists such as Yosui Inoue, Tatsuro Yamashita, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In 1993, he began his "Landscapes with a Corpse" series. In these works, actresses and models act out their own "death" in settings that combine figures with landscapes, which he has exhibited in Germany, the UK, Italy, the US, and elsewhere.

In 1994, he founded the fashion magazine "zyappu" and served as its editor-in-chief. He continues to work across multiple fields, including photography, advertising, publishing, and fashion.
