Chaos to Cosmos: From Chaos to Order

A collection of works by Nozomi Aoyama: "Chaos to Cosmos."
This work visually compares and examines the conflicting concepts of chaos and order through graphic design.

Every spread is composed following the rule that the left page represents "Chaos" and the right page represents "Cosmos." Using three distinct approaches—monochrome forms, color, and everyday materials—the work contrasts random placement with alignment, color mixing with separation, and arbitrary collage with structured arrangement.

This is the second iteration of the project, revisited 11 years after Aoyama first created the work of the same name while attending Tokyo University of the Arts in 2015. Aoyama re-examines what it means to "be creative" and to "be organized"—concepts she has pondered throughout her subsequent work and life—as a back-and-forth between chaos and order. The text also touches upon the serendipity and disorder inherent in the creative process, the act of organizing, Eastern and Western aesthetics, the spread of AI, and human expression.

For the cover, a metallic paper selected through repeated consultations with the printer was used. A blind emboss is applied across the entire surface, overlaid with matte blue pigment foil, and foil stamping is also applied to the spine. By designating the back cover as "Chaos" and the front cover as "Cosmos," the left-right relationship of the interior pages is extended to the binding. With a distinct approach to bookmaking, different papers were used for each theme in the body of the work, and the production process involved fine-tuning details with the printer. Coptic binding.

Nozomi Aoyama (1994–)

Born in 1994. Graphic designer. Graduated from the Department of Design at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2016.

In 2021, she went independent and established the art book publishing label and design company "non Editions." She is primarily active in branding design, including logos and packaging.

In April 2024, she launched the lifestyle brand "uki by non Editions." In this work, "Chaos to Cosmos," she revisits the relationship between chaos and order, using her 2015 university project of the same name as a starting point.
