Paper form

Hiroshi Ogawa, "Paper Forms." This is a collection of works that summarize paper modeling, which transforms a single sheet of paper from a flat surface to a three-dimensional object through operations such as "folding," "bending," "cutting," and "assembling." This is the first edition published by Kyuryudo in 1967. This item comes with a slipcase, dust jacket, and actual patterns for creating the works.

In the first half, various three-dimensional works created from white paper are included as monochrome photographs. The photographs show the shapes created by folds, curved surfaces, cut surfaces, and combinations, as well as the light and shadows that fall on them. In the "Making" section in the second half, the production method of each work is introduced with diagrams, allowing the reader to trace how the finished forms are created from various operations.

In his afterword, Ogawa states that he realized that the more paper is worked on, the further it deviates from its inherent beauty, and conversely, the simpler the operation, the more the beauty of the paper itself is utilized. This collection of works develops the inherent properties of paper into three-dimensional forms through familiar hand movements such as "folding," "bending," "cutting," and "assembling."

The preface is by Hiroshi Hara, and the book design and layout are by Ikko Tanaka. The book is structured to include not only viewing but also the act of touching paper and creating shapes oneself, by combining the first half that shows the shapes of the works through photographs, the second half that conveys the actual production methods, and the actual patterns. In 1968, it won the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award, and in the same year, the "Paper Forms Exhibition" was held at the Museum of Modern Art, Kanagawa.

Hiroshi Ogawa (1932–)

Born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1932. Sculptor.

Exhibited at the Action Art Exhibition from 1955. Participated in the Group Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition, Japan International Art Exhibition, Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition, and Showa-kai Exhibition. In 1963, he received the Ube City Award at the 1st Outdoor Sculpture Competition held in Ube City.

In 1967, "Paper Forms" was published by Kyuryudo. In the same year, he participated in the "MADE WITH PAPER" exhibition in New York. In 1968, he won the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award and held the "Paper Forms Exhibition" at the Museum of Modern Art, Kanagawa.

At the time of the publication of "Paper Forms," he was a member of the sculpture department of the Action Art Association and a judge for the same. He created three-dimensional forms using paper, a familiar material, through operations such as folding, bending, cutting, and assembling.
