A collection of works in which Tadanori Yokoo visited hot springs throughout Japan, compiling his experiences and impressions from those places into text and paintings. The content, which was serialized in the free paper "51 (Five L)" from its inaugural issue in November 2005 to the December 2007 issue, was revised and expanded, then published by Shinchosha in 2008.

This book chronicles Yokoo's transformation from someone who once disliked hot springs to becoming captivated by them. Visiting various hot springs such as Kinosaki, Ikaho, Nasu, and Isawa, he intertwines the landscapes, inns, baths, and memories of his travels with his own experiences and past images.

The nostalgic Japanese atmosphere found in hot spring towns connects with Yokoo's personal memories, fantasies, and events that occurred in those places, transforming into a new world of painting. The book includes 24 major works created specifically for this publication, making it both a hot spring travelogue and a collection that traces Tadanori Yokoo's art and thoughts.

To coincide with its publication, a solo exhibition titled "Tadanori Yokoo: Onsenism" was held at Nishimura Gallery from March 11 to April 12, 2008. Fifteen paintings with hot springs as their theme were exhibited, presenting an overall picture of the series in conjunction with the book.

Tadanori Yokoo (1936-)

Born in Hyogo Prefecture. Artist.

Active as a graphic designer since the 1960s, he has worked on designs in a wide range of fields including theater, film, music, and publishing. He gained attention for works that combined Japanese popular culture, indigenous imagery, personal memories, and views on life and death.

In 1981, he announced his transition to painting. Since then, unconstrained by existing styles or genres, he has continued to create in diverse forms such as painting, prints, posters, photographs, and writing, based on recurring themes and personal experiences.

He has held solo and retrospective exhibitions at museums in Japan and abroad. In 2012, the Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art opened in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. He presents works that transform places and events encountered in daily life, such as hot springs, waterfalls, Y-junctions, his hometown, dreams, and memories, into his unique visual world.
