Ryuudai Takano (1963–)
Born in Fukui Prefecture in 1963, Ryuudai Takano is a photographer.
After graduating from Waseda University's School of Political Science and Economics in 1987, he began to actively showcase his work in the 1990s.
His photographic expressions are characterized by their intellectual structure, centering on themes such as sexuality, the body, and everyday life. He received the 31st Kimura Ihee Award in 2006 for his series "In My Room," which features male nudes photographed in his own home. He continues to explore the relationship between photography and perception through various approaches, including his "Daily Photo" series, which continuously records daily snapshots, "Me and Them," a portrait series featuring himself alongside his subjects, and a series capturing shadows in the city.
In 2010, he co-founded "Photo-Secession" with Risaku Suzuki, Taiji Matsue, Shinno Kuraishi, and Minoru Shimizu, engaging in critical practices concerning photographic expression. In 2025, he will hold "Ryuudai Takano Casbah – To Survive This Daily Life –" at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. Alongside his ongoing creative work, he continues to hold exhibitions and publish books, establishing himself as one of the most important artists in contemporary Japanese photography.
