Shunga Exhibition

This is the official exhibition catalog for the "Shunga Exhibition" held at Eisei Bunko in 2015.

The exhibition was planned for Japan in response to the great success of "Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art," held at the British Museum from 2013 to 2014. After approaching several museums and art galleries, it was finally realized at Eisei Bunko, where Hosokawa Morihiro served as chairman.

Through original paintings, woodblock prints, miniature prints, and erotic books, the catalog introduces the diverse expressions and reception of shunga that developed during the Edo period. In addition to reproductions of the works, it includes essays by Tadashi Kobayashi, Monta Hayakawa, Andrew Gerstle, Aki Ishigami, Naoyuki Kinoshita, and Hidekazu Miyake, as well as artist commentaries and a catalog of works.

The large volume comprises 623 pages. Art direction was by Kazuya Takaoka, and design by Shuichi Ito, Yoshiki Saito, and Hisakata Goto. This is an exhibition record that examines shunga from multiple perspectives, including art history, publishing culture, social regulations, and collection by daimyo families.
