The photobook “HONG KONG” by photographer and artist Saiko Otake (b. 1988). This self-published zine, released in 2020, compiles photographs taken in Hong Kong during Otake’s visit in 2018. It was produced alongside “VIETNAM” in preparation for her solo exhibition “GALAGALA” that same year.
Otake photographed a variety of things encountered in the streets of Hong Kong, including snack packaging, facility maps, cardboard adorned with illustrations, bus bodies, and neon signs. Rather than capturing cityscapes or landmarks, she focuses on colors, letters, shapes, and forms found in everyday surroundings.
Otake habitually carries a compact camera and continues to photograph things that catch her eye, as if collecting them. Her method of combining photographs to create new relationships between colors and shapes also resonates with drawing and collage.
This volume is one in a series of self-published photobooks that has been ongoing since “NIPPON” in 2016. At the solo exhibition “GALAGALA,” held at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO in 2020, photographic works with the same layout as the spreads in this book were also exhibited.
