Memory of a Town Postcards (signed)

A postcard-style photo book by Mitsugu Onishi. This collection features color snapshots capturing the daily lives of people and the towns, primarily in Tokyo's downtown areas.

The photographs depict various places remaining in the towns, such as candy stores, barbershops, greengrocers, and fish markets in Tokyo's downtown alleys and shopfronts, as well as the Yokohama News Theater in Yokohama. Onishi captures the casual scenes and people in their daily lives from the perspective of someone walking through the town.

In the text included in this book, Onishi describes his own sensation of always carrying a town map in his pocket and examining its details with a magnifying glass. As he follows the alleys on the map and visits candy stores, public baths, tobacco shops, greengrocers, soba noodle shops, and movie theaters, the real town and the town in his memories begin to overlap.

Mitsugu Onishi (Born 1952)

Born in Fukagawa, Tokyo. Photographer.

Graduated from Tokyo College of Photography in 1974. Worked in the research and academic affairs departments of the same college from 1975 to 1994, serving as a full-time lecturer. Subsequently, he worked as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Zokei University, Kanto Gakuin University, and also as a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts.

He has walked through towns, primarily in Tokyo's downtown areas and new towns along the bay, taking snapshots of the daily lives of their residents and urban landscapes. Early on, he also embraced digital cameras and web-based photo presentations, exploring new expressions and ways of showcasing photography.

His major works include "WONDER LAND 1980-1989," "Memory of a Town," "Distant Summer," "Shitamachi Junjo Camera," "Honobono Ryojo Camera," "Tokyo Techo Jojo Camera Saijiki," "Wonderland," and "Sunamachi."

In 1985, he received the 22nd Taiyo Award for "Town at the River Mouth." In 1993, he received the 18th Ihei Kimura Award for "Distant Summer" and other works.

His major collections are held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Kawasaki City Museum, and the Japan Foundation.
