HAPPENING is an art book by graphic designer and art director Asuka Wakida.
It is a collection of works based on Wakida's graduation project from Tokyo University of the Arts, compiling her personal diaries, photographs, and other actual records, with illustrations of people and events she encountered each day presented on a two-page spread. New works from 2018 were added, and the book was published by STAIRS PRESS in 2019.
As the title "HAPPENING" suggests, this book depicts not extraordinary events but rather the small occurrences of everyday life. Conversations with friends, landscapes seen while traveling, people met in the city, sudden emotional fluctuations—these fragments are quietly portrayed through soft lines and colors.
"Our daily lives are full of happenings.
Every tiny day is wonderful and fated."
As these words suggest, the book is underpinned by an outlook that emphasizes carefully observing and living through each day.
While an illustration collection, it also possesses the feel of a diary, drawing book, design book, and even a personal novel, with Asuka Wakida's sense of everyday life itself crystallized into a single volume.
The book design is by Hana Yazaki. The soft binding of the codex is also a charm.
Awarded the Taito Ward Mayor's Encouragement Prize in 2017.
