Nobuyoshi Araki's photobook, "TOKYO NUDE," is a large-format collection published by Mother Brain in 1989. It juxtaposes images of female nudes with scenes of Tokyo's changing landscape, undergoing redevelopment during the bubble economy. Shot with an ASAHI PENTAX 6×7, each spread features one urban Tokyo landscape and one female nude.

Construction sites, buildings mid-reconstruction, empty lots, and roads capture Tokyo as it transitioned from the Showa to the Heisei era. Alongside them, the naked bodies of women stand before the camera, mostly expressionless. The juxtaposition of urban landscapes and female nudes on each spread, and their repetition, creates the book's overall rhythm.

Another characteristic of this book is its large format, approximately 395x300mm. Each photograph is arranged prominently, resulting in a high visual density when the pages are opened. By placing two distinct subjects, the city and the body, with the same size and rhythm, the book creates a back-and-forth between a changing Tokyo and static bodies.

Akira Suei, who collaborated with Araki on the magazine "Shashin Jidai" in the 1980s, was involved in the editing. Years later, in his book "Photobook Kyo Araki," Suei cited this book as one of the most memorable works from his collaborations with Araki, noting that Araki learned of his wife Yoko's illness during its production. Yoko passed away the following year, in 1990, a period that also led to his later works, "Sentimental Journey / Winter Journey."

Book design was by Hisane Ishihama, and printing by Toppan Printing. First edition, first printing, published by Mother Brain and distributed by Ohta Publishing on December 1, 1989.

Nobuyoshi Araki (1940–)

Born in Minowa, Shitaya-ku, Tokyo City in 1940. Photographer.

In 1963, he graduated from Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering, Department of Photography and Printing, and joined Dentsu. In 1964, he won the first Taiyo Award for "Sacchin." In 1971, he published "Sentimental Journey," a privately printed photobook documenting his honeymoon with his wife, Yoko. In 1972, he left Dentsu and began working as a photographer.

In 1974, he co-founded the "WORKSHOP Photography School" with Shomei Tomatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, Yoko Ono, and Masahisa Fukase. He has repeatedly photographed his life and immediate surroundings, including Tokyo, women, flowers, skies, cats, and diaries, and has published numerous photobooks.

His major photobooks include "Sentimental Journey," "My Love, Yoko," "Tokyo Lucky Hole," "Sentimental Journey / Winter Journey," "Tokyo Biyori," "Sacchin," and "TOKYO NUDE." His works are held in museums both in Japan and internationally, including Tate and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
