A photo book by Nobuyoshi Araki, “Tokyo Lucky Hole.” It contains photographs taken between 1983 and 1985, primarily in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, documenting the sex industry of the time, the women who worked there, the customers, and the atmosphere of the neighborhood.
Published as part of TASCHEN’s Bibliotheca Universalis series, this volume contains over 800 photographs.

In Kabukicho during the early 1980s, new types of sex establishments were emerging one after another, including no-pants cafes, peep shows, and private massage parlors. Araki visited these establishments and photographed them repeatedly alongside Akira Sueki, then editor-in-chief of the magazine Shashin Jidai. Through their eccentric services and performances, as well as the women who worked there, Araki documented the unique vitality and atmosphere that filled the entertainment district before the revision and enforcement of the Adult Entertainment Business Law in 1985.

The included photographs include works published in Shashin Jidai, as well as photos taken during the magazine’s reporting. Rather than simply observing the scene from the outside, Araki also appeared in the images as a subject, incorporating his interactions with the women and the people working in the establishments into the photographs. The volume showcases Araki’s distinctive photographic expression, blurring the boundaries between photographer and subject, and between documentation and staging.

The volume opens with “The Photographer between a Man and a Woman” by Masahito Ami and “The Lucky Hole as the Black Hole” by Akira Sueki. Sueki reflects on the evolution of the sex industry at the time and the fervor of Kabukicho, drawing on his own experiences. Accompanied by photographs, the text offers insights into the urban culture, sex industry, and magazine media of the 1980s.

This photo book internationally introduces the works that followed the publication of Tokyo Lucky Hole by Ota Publishing in 1991. It documents Nobuyoshi Araki’s activities in the 1980s and the entertainment districts of Tokyo at the time.
