This is the official catalog published for "David Hockney: A Retrospective," an exhibition that toured various locations in Japan (Seibu Museum of Art, Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, National Museum of Art, Osaka, etc.) in 1989.

It covers the works of Hockney, one of the leading British painters of the 20th century, from his early period to his photo collages of the 1980s, tracing the trajectory of his creation over approximately 30 years. The content provides a comprehensive overview of Hockney, who explored the relationship between "seeing" and "depicting" through diverse expressive activities, including his pool series depicting the light of Los Angeles, portraits of family and friends, stage designs, and photographic works.
The large-format layout vibrantly reproduces the details and colors of the works, making it a valuable resource for tracing the artist's creative journey.

David Hockney

Born in Bradford, England, in 1937.
He showed promise while studying at the Royal College of Art, and by the 1960s, he became internationally known as a leading Pop artist.

He moved to the United States in 1964 and based his work in Los Angeles. As seen in his representative works featuring pools, he depicted light and air with clear compositions and vibrant colors. Since the 1970s, he has continued to question the relationship between "seeing" and "reproduction" by actively incorporating new technologies, such as his "Joiners" photo collages, stage designs, and iPad drawings.

His first major retrospective, "A Retrospective," was held in Japan in 1988, and an exhibition titled "David Hockney" was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2023, maintaining his high popularity across generations.
He continues to work actively, based in the UK and France.
