Eric CARLE (1929-2021)

Born in New York, USA, in 1929. Picture book author and illustrator. After spending his early childhood in America, he moved to Germany with his family at the age of six. He studied graphic design at the State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart, and in 1952, he returned to the US and worked as a designer and art director.

In 1967, he began creating picture books after illustrating Bill Martin Jr.'s text for "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?". The following year, he published his own picture book, "1, 2, 3 to the Zoo," and gained worldwide recognition with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," published in 1969. Throughout his life, he created approximately 90 picture books, characterized by vibrant colors, unique collage techniques, and interactive book structures.

His works have been translated into over 80 languages and are beloved by children worldwide. In 2002, he opened The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts. He received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
